A Short Video of some Motifs/Techniques Learned in the Free Courses!
Working today on a set of Alphabet Soup blocks. These are fusible applique letters in golden brown batik, with spicy mustard colored stem stitch embroidered around the edge.
I'm almost finished with this first stage...next comes the embroidery of the vines and flowers.
Then, assembly of the quilt top...
BTW, thanks to everyone for such a warm welcome to this new pattern; I hope you enjoy stitching the blocks....and that you'll share a photo when your version is completed.
Hugs!
This is a simple quilt...bear paw blocks...and squares/rectangles sashing. I drew the design out on graph paper...so it's easy to design. Just copy my idea! I'm sure it's not new...as it is so simple. It's king size...much too large for a photo...so, here are several. You can easily make your's smaller...just not so many blocks.
The ribbon border really sets off the Bears Paw blocks that are set on point. It all "floats" within a large cream-on-cream border that is the same fabric as the background for the blocks. Grab some graph paper and draw out your own! When you piece the inside border...square-rectangle-square pieces...set them in a Seminole style pattern...and don't trim of the edges until you sew it to the quilt. Just match the quarter inch seam line to the "points" of the squares...then trim of the little "flying triangles" afterwards. Sorry, I forgot to take a photo before I trimmed the seams...so I added some drawn lines to simulate where the squares were...that made little hanging triangles in the seam allowance. And, I did not have to deal with any bias edges!
This quilt top could be done...but, I want to do one more border I think.I don't have much room to hang a quilt for photos...sorry, you'll have to just be happy with photos of it hanging on my storage doors...as it is too cold and wet to drag it outside!
Actually, it was "supposed" to have a large pink floral border...which I had cut out...and then had to "pack up the quilt project" because other projects with shorter deadlines pushed it aside. Then, when I went through my stash to donate fabric to a charity cause...I included one of the border pieces...thinking it was scrap. Yep, I should have kept the project all together...to avoid that problem! But, the solution was to shorten the width of the border.
The blocks are set on-point...and are from Judy Martins book, Ultimate Quilt Block Patterns. This is a great book, my copy is so worn that I have to keep it together with a large paper clamp!
The blocks could be set in straight rows too.I'm not happy with the quilt having just one small border on it...and will search for a perfect piece to extend the quilt size. Right now, I have plenty of the tan background...but am not sure that is what I want to do. I could add the tan...and applique a vine. There is enough pink left to do flowers...but that will take some planning. So, for now, it's going back into the drawer of UFO's! Perhaps...it will be a good project for the next Retreat in April!
