Back in the Saddle Again.....

Okay, if your are young...or not a fan of American Western movies...you might not get the title...which is a part to a cowboy song. But, I'm back home again. The trip to Huntsville was so very much fun for me! Kim was a wonderful hostess and has the coolest family! The ladies at the Madison guild were very gracious and I really enjoyed sharing my crazy journey with them on Thursday night. The gals that signed up for the crazy quilt class on Saturday just were a hoot! I enjoyed the class even more than them I think! We had a wonderful time stitching and laughing....at and with each other!
I also did my part to help the local economy...and found some treasures!

My Jingle applique quilt was in need of some additional red, yellow, and green...so I'm thinking these will be just great!

There is a plan for a Sunbonnet Sue mini-quilt...so I needed some 30's fabrics to create that.

My ideas for the applique medallion pattern include using batiks for the flowers...and I really scored with these colors!

Lastly, I found some beads for hatpins and even a couple that will make great cabochons! Plus, some needles, glue pen, and other treasures! It's nice to have a chance to shop and actually touch the fabric...instead of buying on-line.

Oh wait, I almost forgot...these lucious fibers and threads! I'm just going to love working with these on my crazy quilt projects!

Thanks again Kim and all the ladies of Madison/Huntsville for such a wonderful visit!

Dying Lace Motifs for Class

Last night, I finished up the items for my supply kits...for this next weekend's class at the Quilter's Combo quilt shop in Madison, Alabama (near Huntsville) on the 13th of July.
There's still a couple of seats open...so, come on down and take a beginner crazy quilt embellishment class! The instruction package is only $20, and there is a kit packed full of silk ribbon, threads, beads, lace motifs, charms, and needles...for only $15. Yes, the kit is being sold under cost...but hey, that's the way I am!
These are my lace motifs...three in each kit. The colors look kind of yucky on these photos...but are really green, peach, pink and pretty.

Next, I have to cut out little pieces of felt to hold the needles...and I'm ready to rock and roll!
There is a lecture/slideshow/trunk show on Thursday night (11 July)...before the Saturday class...for the Madison Quilt Guild. So, if you are a member...don't miss the meeting!

Classes and Patterns

Just a quick note to let y'all know that I have now loaded my patterns and my class instruction downloads over at Patternspot. Just search for Kathy Shaw or Shawkl and you'll find my page. And, while you are there...look around...the site is really starting to pick up some really cool designers!

The class lessons are very reasonable, and although I'm not teaching them online...you can still contact me via email if you need any help.

However, after teaching each of them several times...and not getting any real serious questions...I am confident that the instructions are detailed enough for you to most likely complete any of them with minimal effort.

Still, I'm always here if you need me.
Hugs,

Thank You Ladies! And...a Help?

First off...I have to say right up front...that I just had the most marvelous weekend! The ladies of Meridian, Mississippi are very kind and hospitable...to a feeble minded thing like me!
Hence...my artwork above. The weekend started off...by my gracious hostess "Jacky" arriving at my home, with her equally wonderful husband "Dave" (in tow)...and we loaded all of my class materials and stuff...and headed off for a grand weekend.
We stopped for lunch...and that is where the concern began...as I had left my purse on the top of the freezer in my kitchen. I LEFT MY PURSE! WHAT WOMAN DOES THAT! So, I am seriously looking for HELP...as I need a keeper. The job does not pay well, and the hours are horrible...there is bound to be loads of extra things to be done that are not in the original job description...and most of the time...the employer (me) probably will be so distracted by other things...that you will not even be noticed.
But, if you are interested...please apply! Starting date is now!!!
Geez!
So, after Jackie and Dave both calmed me down...assuring me that I really had no need for money, my insurance card, my drivers license, my Excedrin, my toothbrush and toothpaste...and had more than enough to keep me busy so the Redwork blocks would also not even be missed...we kept on going down the interstate.
And,...they were both right. Dave has stock in Colgate I think...because he was just super quick producing that toothbrush and paste...and he went to CVS the following morning...to get me some Zyrtec for my allergies that decided to get cranked up right away...he's a keeper...and Jackie knows it too! Way to go girlfriend!!
Oh, and Jackie's house...you should just see it! Marvelous! Constructed in the Frank Lloyd Wright style...just a piece of art! Loads of symmetry...and balance...warm and inviting...and the craftsmanship of all that wood...just a marvel! I felt like a princess on top of that gorgeous heirloom bed...with my own bath...and being served my meals with linen napkins! I didn't ask for meals in bed...but I bet Jackie would have done it had I wanted it! So gracious! A real Southern Lady...and wonderful hostess. Of course, I would have expected no less from a gal born in the great state of Mississippi...especially in Meridian!
And, I did manage to wrangle some cool pieces from her fabric collection of swatches before departing...look how great these two look with my Paris fabrics!
And...she sent me home with a beautiful piece of lace too...TO DIE FOR!
Not to be outdone...Mr Dave let me run off with several spools of delicious antique thread. Some of the cream can be used for quilt basting...but the rest will go on my display shelf in the sewing room. He also donated some spools to the ladies in the class.
But...the best part of the entire trip...was getting to teach fifteen ladies a little about silk ribbon flowers. We had a good long talk (mostly I talked...and they listened)...and I talked a lot! They worked until they looked like they were ready to drop...but each was smiling. They went home with more work to be done, but I'm confident that they will have a wonderful time creating ribbon masterpieces!
After a lovely night at the Meridan Opera House...listening to stupendious jazz music, we crashed and slept Saturday...and made our way home on Sunday.
We stopped off at a bookstore for coffee in Tuscaloosa...and lunch at Olive Garden in Oxford...before unloading all my suitcases and such back at the house. Then, Jackie got back underway...so she could get home before dark. I missed talking to her...as soon as she left the driveway. But, I'm pretty sure...her right ear was already bleeding from all the chatter of mine it had endured...and the quiet drive back home "hopefully" repaired any damage...geez, hoping that the damage is not permanent.
"Ssssshhh....don't tell her...but I left my purchase from the bookstore in the backseat of her car..."
"Did I mention....I have a job opening for a KEEPER?".....
See y'all tomorrow morning...as I'm pooped!
LOVE YA LADIES OF MERIDIAN (AND MOBILE)...
HAD A GREAT TIME!!!!
THANKS SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME OVER...AGAIN!!!

Yay! Silk Ribbon Embroidery Course is Here!

With all of the unpacking and laundry yesterday (and I'm still working on the laundry part)...it was late in the day before I ever got around to opening the mail from the last week. And, look what was waiting for me! The color instruction pages for the Silk Ribbon Embroidery (SRE) Course - Small Scale. These will be used in an upcoming trip to Mississippi to visit and teach again with the Magnolia Quilters Group in Meridian. I'm so looking forward to that trip!
The course will include instruction to complete silk ribbon flowers (wisteria, iris, daffodil, foxglove, rosebuds, climbing rose, buttercup, monarda, rose bush, and tulip). And, I have some other fun things to share and talk about! So glad that these instruction packets, and the Silk Ribbon Embroidery Basic Stitch Guide have all arrived before the class. It's nice to be able to check the big task of "Class Instructions" off of my list!

Rose & Lilac Collection - Work Basket

I've had a really relaxing day, totally peaceful...no visitors or phone calls. Hours spent with my embroidery hoop and threads. Just lovely! I'm working on the 3rd class in my Rose & Lilac Collection, but remembered that I have not yet shared my 2nd class with you. So sorry to have forgotten.

This class is for a work basket. It can be large or small...really, any cyllinder shape would work. The instructions give loads of options and can be created in any heighth or width.

The basket is fully lined and could have a gathered top or a detached flat top...or, no top at all.
Wish I had a medium sized one when my son was small...it would have been perfect to put some "quiet" toys into for Sunday services. When he was small...clothes were all that were sewn...as I did not yet quilt or embroider.
Now, when I create things like this...they go to Aidan for her room. She loves to put special writing and drawing books tucked inside for short trips just down stairs.
If there was a quilt guild here in my town...she's have less organizational things..because I would need them for myself. Hugs!
The basket has a removable liner, and the cloth basket part can be washed. So, it's perfect for little fingers to dig around in...even though it was designed as a tribute to the Victorian ladies' work baskets, for holding sewing items.

Rose and Lilac Collection - Class One

Just wanted to share that I have a new class available at Maureen's Vintage Acquisition website. It is the first in a series that I'm calling my Rose and Lilac Collection. The entire collection will be several organizational items...for sewing, crafting, and personal use. Each will have a different embroidery design of roses and lilacs...so all together you can create a lovely collection of beautiful and functional organizational items. This first class is for a mini-wallet and checkbook cover set.
These are both super easy to embroider and to assemble. Only general knowledge of basic sewing machine skills are needed (or you could stitch by hand if you prefer). The embroidery is very basic so that beginners can create the designs with a little practice. Of course instructions are complete...and detailed.
This is the first class of the series that I've completed the instructions for...but hope to have the series finished and available by the end of the fall. This mini-wallet and checkbook cover set is identical in style to what I carry every day...and love them! Except, my current ones do not have this gorgous embroidery on the front...so, guess who is now changing them out for these!
Both of these items are small enough to only need scraps of fabrics to create...and the class cost is set at $15...so that anyone can join in the fun without a major cost requirement. These make great Christmas and Birthday gifts...or just do several in different colors to use yourself! They are completely washable and very durable. The class can be taken anytime, no special registration period. Full color embroidery designs are included for the wallet and the checkbook cover with step-by-step easy assembly instructions too. Hope to see you in class!

Quick Bead Project...Perfect for Stitchers

A new little beading class will be offered over at Maureens Vintage Acquisitions today...a beaded bookmark. Just click on the Take-it-Anytime button tomorrow and you will find it.
However, it is so much MORE than just that. This technique makes lovely beaded trim...that can be made to an an exact length. I like to use it to cover the rim of band boxes and tins after the top has been done in crazy quilt fashion or embroidery and lace. Or, use it in garment construction too!...as a lovely trim to cufs or pockets!
But, it doesn't just stop at trim...it can be a piece of jewelry! Add a clasp to the ends and you have a bracelet...a little longer and you have a necklace.
Attaching a charm to one end and grosgrain ribbon to the other makes a bookmark. These are super gifts for teachers...and it only takes about two hours (or less) to complete the project...so several can be made!
Hope you will consider taking the class...it is VERY reasonably priced...and available any time.
I'm always here to answer any questions...but have also spend hours drawing the charts and creating the narrative to explain just how to make the bookmark...so you would be fine just on your own as well I'm sure!

Do You Have a Crystal Ball?...

I do...of sorts. I actually have been working on a pattern for a crystal tassle top mini-class. And decided that a crystal ball would be good to add to the class as well....it makes a super cool closure.
Just work a little perle cotton or crochet thread loop (cast on stitch over 4 threads)...or use a child's hair elastic band...to fit over the ball, which is treated like a button. Now, to just get the charts drawn and the instructions written.

Magnolia Quilters of MS

I just had a wonderful weekend...with the Magnolia Quilters of Meridian, Mississippi and some of their friends. No photos (hoping that someone will send me some to share)...but we all had a great time. These ladies were so gracious and kind to me during the visit...and I had a real blast sharing with them about crazy quilting.
And, they put on a great spread of food too!!!....of which I was "wearing" almost immediately! Geez, you just can't take me anywhere!
So, a huge cyber thanks to Charlyn for hosting me...and for all of the ladies for giving me such a warm welcome to Mississippi!

I'm dancing in buttons...

Gorgeous buttons arrived yesterday...and I loaded them on my Etsy Shop this morning. Check these new arrivals out!
I have been waiting and waiting to get some of the small cobalt buttons...but they are always out of stock. But, not now...so I have ten to share!

These are the new designs..and the glass is so carved it is just stupendous...love the aurora borealis colors!

And, check out these gorgeous flowers. Each petal is etched in the glass and a tinsy tiny little gold stem and trim accent the delicate looking flower. I got them in white/pink, peridot green, and aurora borealis colors...
Just gorgeous...
...but aren't ALL handmade glass buttons that way...gorgeous! I could just sit and stare at them all day long! Beautiful!
If have never treated yourself to a Czech Glass Button..really, you should...every woman should own a button this pretty.
And, they also make beautiful brooches if you turn them into a cabochon (cut the shank off) and bead the edge.
Don't know how to convert a button, edge with beads, and create a brooch?
Well, I have a class being offered over at Maureen's Vintage Acquisitions...and you can learn. She has all the supplies even...in a handy little kit. So, no need to hunt all over town for cabochons and it also includes one of my Czech Glass Buttons too!
