To relax last night...I got out some glorious Swarvoski crystal elements and other beads and made these hatpins. I love working on beaded objects as it satisfies the need for bling in my life!
These will be a beautiful addition to a velvet pin cushion...but, I'll have to make one as all of my current PCs are full of sewing pins! Do you ever make hatpins?
Updated to add: I went and looked...and Firemountain Gems does still carry hatpins (search for stickpins). The closure at the bottom are seperate so you have to order those too. They also have the "sweater pins" discussed in one of the comments as well. Just info for you...just in case you want to try these beauties yourself!
Edited to add: The beads are placed on the hatpin and a drop of E-6000 glue holds them in place. Hugs!
p.s. I've also done this with straight pins...and they make a great little addition to special pin cushions. Especially when I make the pin cushion as a gift for someone...just adds that extra touch! If you want to learn more about the different types of straight pins available check out this post on DoYouSew.
Good Evening Kathy, I have never made hat pins, but I would certainly love to as I love working with beads. I have never come across the elements to make hat pins, well apart from the beads. I adore them, they are so very pretty. I love how you said you spent a relaxing evening making these hat pins as I would find it relaxing as well. Best Wishes to you, Daphne
Hi Kathy Not being much of a hat wearer, I've never thought about hat pins. I'm sure they must be necessary with the fascinators worn in England and elsewhere. I need to ask if you have any patterns or thoughts about sweater pins. There used to be such that had clasps on either side of a chain to hold a sweater closed. I have a vest and a short jacket that don't overlap enough for buttons. A sweater pin/clasp would be perfect. What are your thoughts lovely lady. If a bug/spider could be incorporated, I would be even more pleased.
have not come across hat pins in yeas, can remember my Grandmother using them many years ago, she passed away in 1956. Gather they are not to put in hats but to adorn your pin cushion, what a lovely idea.
Kitblu, I know just the pins you are speaking of. I have had one of them for years and it has little Russian dolls hanging from it. Believe it or not, these type of pins are available for beading...using some larger style beads. The next bead order I place might just have to include these so you can see how they work up. Hugs! Thanks for the challenge! Kathy
I love wearing my hats and I feel much more secure if I have a pin holding the hat down. We have searched all over the place for some pins with no luck. I didn't even think of FMG. So my Dearly Beloved ended up buying me a couple of antique ones at huge cost, LOL. That's how it goes sometimes.
But for future reference, can you tell me how you hold the beads on to the pins please? Yours are lovely but wouldn't work for my hats as there isn't enough pin left, but with fewer beads they would be great. I don't know what you use to stop the beads falling down the pin though, so any help would be gratefully received. Thank you.

I've never made hatpins but have a few antique ones that belonged to my grandmother. Where do you find the bases for making them?
ReplyDeleteMagie, these six stick bases were found at JoAnn Fabrics when I was in Huntsville.
